Catastrophic Earthquake

On March 28, 2025, a catastrophic magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck central Myanmar, marking the most devastating seismic event in the region since 1912. Its epicenter was the Sagaing Township. Several strong earthquakes followed, as well as multiple aftershocks. The earthquake directly killed up to 5,352 people in Myanmar and 103 in Thailand, while one person died from shock in Vietnam. Up to 11,404 people were injured and hundreds more were reported missing. Deaths occurred in the administrative areas of Mandalay, Naypyidaw, Sagaing, Shan, Bago, Magway and Kayin.
